President’s Message
Honourable Members of the ISWS
I express my sincere thanks to all the members of the ISWS for electing and giving me this opportunity to serve the society in the capacity of its President. The society has been able to carve out a special niche among the professional societies dedicated to Indian Agriculture. With a strong group of society members, it has been marching ahead since its inception in 1968. With the recent hosting of the 25th APWSS, organization of biennial conferences, initiation of a number of awards and travel grants particularly for students working in weed science, regular publication of the Indian Journal of Weed Science and other host of activities, it has made its present felt in the field of weed science societies across the globe. Announcement

The Indian Society of Weed Science has instituted various Awards for recognizing significant contributions of senior, middle level and young scientists to promote weed science research. These awards are presented biennially at the time of Biennial Conference organised by the Society. Nominations from the eligible members of the Society are invited for the following categories of Awards for the biennium 2014-15.

I. ISWS Lifetime Achievement award
II. ISWS Gold Medal
III. ISWS Fellow
IV. Dr. T.V. Muniyappa Young Scientist Award
V. Adusumilli Rama Rao Best Ph.D. Thesis Award
VI. ISWS Best Book Award
VII ISWS Student Travel Award
In addition to above, the Society also awards ISWS Best Poster Presentation Awards during the biennial conference, for which, applications are not required.
    • The awards are open to all the Indian Scientists who have worked or working in India or abroad, in the field of Weed Science subject to fulfilment of eligibility criteria laid down for the respective award

    • The awardee must be Annual or Life Member of the Indian Society of Weed Science. (If any non-member wishes to apply, he/she should become a member before submission of application for the award).

    • No member of the Executive Committee (EC) shall be a member of the Judging Committee/Search Committee.
    • No member from the Executive Committee (EC) will be considered for ISWS awards during his/her EC term.

    • It may not be necessary to have a Separate Judging Committee/Search Committee for each ISWS Award. The EC may constitute one, two or more Judging Committees/Search Committees for recommending names for ISWS Awards.
    • The EC shall finalize and approve the names of ISWS Awards, whose decision shall be final and binding.
    • Evaluation for all the ISWS Awards shall be made based on score system developed for each award. The awards shall be given strictly on merit. However, minimum qualifying marks shall be 60 per cent in each case.
    • The number of Awards shall be as under

      ISWS Lifetime Achievement award - one in two years
      o ISWS Gold medal - one in each year
      o ISWS Fellow - three in each year
      o ISWS Young Scientist Award - one in each year
      o Adusumilli Rama Rao Best Ph.D. Thesis Award
      o ISWS Best Book award - one each in English and Hindi in two years
      o ISWS Student Travel Award - three in each year
      o ISWS Best Poster Award - 3 in each conference for scientists, and two for students
      However, the EC may increase or decrease the number, if found necessary.
    • The award is given in the biennial conference of the Society.
    • The Society will provide single III AC railway fare from the place of residence of the selected awardee to the place of biennial meeting and back, in case the recipient fails to get the same from his organization or the awardee who has attained superannuation.
    • If the applicant desires, he/she may send an advance copy, but the action will be taken only when the application is received duly sponsored by the University/Institution concerned
    • Five copies of the nomination for award in the prescribed proforma duly completed in all respect and supported with one copy of documentary proof for eligibility, one copy of reprints of research publications (10 best) and testimonial in support of the information in the application may be routed through proper channel.

This award has been instituted to honour weed scientists who have made outstanding professional contributions at the national level as evident from patents/technologies developed, published work and/or promoting the discipline of weed science. One award will be given in two years.

Eligibility:-:

  • The award is open to all the ISWS life members. The person must be life member of ISWS for at least 15 years at the time of nomination.
  • The person must have retired from the active service before 1st January of the year of the award. However, the person(s) retired long ago can also be considered.
  • The contributions of the awardees should have national/international impact.

Mode of Selection:

  • Executive Committee (EC) of the Indian Society of Weed Science shall appoint a Judging / Search Committee of 3-5 eminent scientists.
  • Judging Committee shall invite nominations from ISWS Gold Medal / Fellows in the prescribed proforma.
  • The awardees can also be nominated by ISWS Gold Medal holders / Fellows. One ISWS Gold Medal holder / Fellow can nominate only one awardee at a time.
  • Judging Committee shall evaluate the proposals / nominations received from (2) and (3) above as per marks and guidelines given in the Evaluation Proforma. The list shall be prepared in order of merit.
  • The recommendations of the Judging Committee shall be discussed in the EC meeting whose decision shall be final and binding.
  • The recipient would be conferred the award with citation at the biennial conference of the Society.
The ISWS Gold Medal is conferred in recognition of professional leadership, outstanding contributions and services to the Indian Society of Weed Science rendered by the life members of the Society. One Gold Medal will be given for each year.

Eligibility:-:

  • The award is open to all ISWS Fellows and ISWS Recognition Award holders only.
  • The candidate must be ISWS Fellow / ISWS Recognition Award holder for at least three years at the time of inviting nominations for the award.
  • The contributions of the awardees should have national/international impact.

Mode of Selection:

  • Executive Committee of the Indian Society of Weed Science (ISWS) shall appoint a Judging Committee of 3-5 eminent scientists.
  • Applicants are required to submit application in the prescribed proforma through proper channel. However, the retired persons can apply directly.
  • Judging Committee shall evaluate the proposals/nominations as per marks and guidelines given in the evaluation proforma. The list shall be prepared in order of merit.
  • The recommendations of the Judging Committee shall be discussed in the EC meeting, whose decisions shall be final and binding.
  • The recipients would be conferred the award with citation and Gold Medal at the biennial conference of the Society.
The ISWS Fellow is conferred in recognition of professional leadership, outstanding contributions and services to the Indian Society of Weed Science rendered by the life members of the Society. Three ISWS Fellows will be given for each year.

Eligibility:-:

  • The award is open to all Indian Scientists, who have worked /working, in India/ Abroad, in the field of Weed Science.
  • The candidate(s) must be a Life Member of the ISWS for at least 10 years at the time of inviting nominations for the award.
  • The contributions of the awardees should have National /International impact.
  • The candidates should be of the rank of Associate Professor or above with at least 7 years experience or Asstt. Professor / Lecturer with not less than 15 years experience.

Mode of Selection:

  • Executive Committee (EC) of the Indian Society of Weed Science (ISWS) shall appoint a Search Committee of 3-5 eminent Agronomists.
  • Applicants are required to submit application in the prescribed proforma through proper channel. However, the retired persons can apply directly.
  • Judging Committee shall evaluate the proposals/nominations as per marks and guidelines given in the evaluation proforma.
  • The list shall be prepared in order of merit..
  • The recommendations of the Judging Committee shall be discussed in the EC meeting, whose decisions shall be final and binding.
  • The recipients would be conferred the award with citation and memento at the biennial conference of the Society.
This award has been instituted to encourage/motivate young Indian scientists for high quality fundamental or applied research in the field of weed science. The award is open to all scientists in the field of weed science. One award will be given for each year.

Eligibility:-:

  • M.Sc. degree from any recognized University/Institute in India/abroad.
  • At least five years research experience in weed science as evident from the published work in reputed journals.
  • Age not more than 35 years as on 1st January of the year in which the applications are invited.
  • The candidate(s) selected for the award are awarded a citation and memento usually during the biennial meeting of the Society. The recipient of the award is expected to deliver a talk based on his contributions submitted for the award.
  • A panel of judges nominated by the Executive Council of the Society from time to time examines all nominations as per score system for each contribution. The evaluation report of the judges is sent to the Executive Council, whose decision is final.
  • Scientists interested to apply for the award should send their application through proper channel (through the University/Institute concerned) along with six copies of the publications and synopsis (about 500 words) precisely enumerating the work done and its relevance to the objective of the award. The nominations in the prescribed application form must reach the Secretary, Indian Society of Weed Science by 31 December, 2013.
This award has been instituted to motivate high quality fundamental and applied research amongst Ph.D. scholars in India in the field of Weed Science. This is an annual award open to all Indian students in the field of Weed Science. Only those applicants will be considered for this Award whose final viva-voce examination is completed by 31st December of the year for which the award is applied. The award carries a citation and memento.
Research workers in the field of Weed Science interested to apply for this Award are required to send their applications through proper channel along with a copy of thesis submitted by them for their Ph.D. degree together with 6 copies of synopsis, highlighting the significance of research. The nomination should be accompanied by a certificate from the concerned Head of the Department that the research work of the candidate has been a significant factor in obtaining the data presented in the thesis leading to the conferment of Ph.D. degree in the field of weed science.
Application for the award together with supporting documents should be sent to Secretary, Indian Society of Weed Science through the concerned Head of Department by 31 December, 2013.
  • This award has been instituted for the books on weed science published in English or Hindi.
  • One award each for English and Hindi books will be given during the biennium.
  • The books can be authored / edited, and must contain at least 200 pages.
  • Two copies of the book should be submitted along with the prescribed proforma.
  • A Judging Committee with evaluate the books and prepare a list in order to merit based on the quality of printing, originality, applicability, publisher, and advancement in the field of weed science.
  • Recommendation of the judging Committee will be examined by the Executive Council, whose decision will be final and binding.
  • Application should be submitted through proper channel along with prescribed proforma. However, retired persons may submit directly.
  • The award will carry a certificate and memento.
Posters presented by scientists during the biennial conference organized by the Society are judged by a committee, and the first, second and third prizes carrying a citation and cash awards of Description: rs_original1,000, 750 and 500 respectively are awarded during the concluding session of the conference. Two such awards for posters presented by the PG students will also be given. <
  • 1. Ph.D. students who have completed one year of study are eligible for this grant.
  • 2. The students must be working on thesis problem related to weed science
  • 3. Five students will be selected based on the academic record performance so far and topic of research for participation the ISWS Conference
  • 4. Selected students will be provided 3rd AC Train fare and free registration at the Conference.
  • 5. Students have already completed their Ph.D. degree will not be eligible for this grant.
  • 6. Applications in the probed format should be submitted through the Email ID of the Chairman / advisor of the student.
